Past visitors to the Washington Channel may have noticed a collection of trash and logs floating on the water, gathering under piers, and clumping along the shore. During to a year of record rainfall and flooding in 2018, debris was washed into the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers and was pushed up into the Washington Channel by the tide. All of this floating debris harms the environment and aquatic life, damages piers and propellers, and is rather unsightly for everyone who lives, works, and recreates on the water.
At the beginning of the 2019 boating and river recreation season, The District Wharf Community Association and an amazing group of partners undertook a large-scale cleanup to remove over 200 yards of floating trash, debris, and logs from the water.
Using turbidity curtains and water bubblers, The Wharf set up large corrals to keep debris close to the shore. Washington Channel residents, businesses, and stakeholders gathered debris from across the Channel and brought it to the nearest corral at the appropriate time. From there, we pulled debris out onto the dock, separated trash and wood, cut up the wood, and hauled the trash and wood off to the appropriate facilities.
This coalition sought to reduce water pollution, enhance river recreation, and show off the District’s amazing asset of the Washington Channel. Working together in March 2018, we were able to remove over 200 yards of debris from the Washington Channel.

With ongoing rainfall, wind, and tides, trash and debris continue to get pushed from the Potomac River into the Washington Channel. Further discussion is needed to develop a long-term debris management program for this public waterway.
